I used Sport Smoke LLC cold burning (cold burning is still hot, 160 F) pull fuse grenades at Red storm. They were Excellent.

The other option is expired marine distress signals, but they are very bulky and expensive.

One down side of getting any pull ring fused items is the additional hazmat shipping charge of $25-$30.

awhile ago i tried an m80 inside a bb-filled cut-in-half toilet paper roll thinger and tested it in a secret place.....Man I threw it maybe a good 100 feet after lighting the extended fuse and it took a while but it blew up, and like 3 or 4 bbs came down where i was about 125 feet back (after running back a few)....so i could say it was pretty strong..(maybe like a real grenade what is the shrapnel radius of a real hand grenade)
..for smoke, i use a pyrotechnic mix inside a semi-sealed abs pipe (KNO3 + Sucrose, but it does shoot flames and leaves lots of residue. its closed with duct tape so that no powder will fall out, but weak enough so that it wont contain the powder while burning, creating a giant grenade) its not
